Privacy policy

This policy covers three iOS apps published by Eric Fortuna: AuraVolleyball, Aura Volleyball Scorekeeper and Volleyball Referee Signals (together, "the apps"), and this website, auravolleyball.com.

Information the apps collect

None, unless you choose to share a live score. There is no sign-up, no account, no email capture and no user profile, and nothing is used for tracking or advertising. The one exception is live score sharing in AuraVolleyball, described below: when you turn it on, the team names and scores you enter are stored on auravolleyball.com for up to a day so others can follow the match.

Information stored on your device

The apps save your preferences and content on your device so they work the way you left them. It never leaves your device unless you choose to send it somewhere:

• Teams you have favorited, with their last-known rank and next event, and your filter preferences
• Calendar events you choose to import
• Match scores, point logs and saved match history in the scorekeeper

This is stored with Apple's standard local storage (UserDefaults), declared under reason code CA92.1, app functionality only. Deleting an app removes it. I can't recover it, because I never had it.

Network requests the apps make

AuraVolleyball fetches publicly available rankings, schedules and team information so it can show them to you. These requests contain no identifying information about you: no account, no device identifier and no advertising ID. The sources are:

• Advanced Event Systems (AES / SportsEngine): published rankings, rosters and event schedules
• VolleyLens: published rankings and match results
• The Ohio Valley Region calendar and national event directories
• Calendar feeds (iCal) you choose to add
• Club logo images, loaded from clubs' own websites

Aura Volleyball Scorekeeper and Volleyball Referee Signals don't make network requests for content. They work offline, apart from links you choose to open and anything you choose to share.

Data about athletes

AuraVolleyball displays team rankings, tournament schedules and rosters that are already published publicly by Advanced Event Systems and VolleyLens. It does not access private club systems, does not use non-public sources, and does not collect any information about any athlete beyond what those organizations already publish.

Calendar access

If you choose to import a calendar or add a tournament to your calendar, iOS asks for permission first. That access is used only to read the calendars you select and to write the events you ask for. Calendar contents are never sent anywhere. You can turn the permission off at any time in iOS Settings.

If you turn on a family calendar for a team, the app creates a calendar named "Aura" plus the team name on your iPhone and keeps that team's tournaments and games in it. Sharing that calendar is done by you, in Apple's Calendar app, through iCloud. Aura's server isn't involved and never sees who you share with. When you share a single event, the app builds a text message and a calendar file on your phone and hands them to the app you pick, such as Messages or Mail. Nothing leaves your phone through Aura.

Live score sharing

In AuraVolleyball's scorekeeper you can choose to share a match live. Only when you tap Start Sharing Live, the app sends the scoreboard to auravolleyball.com each time it changes: the two team names you typed, team colors, the score, sets, which team is serving and any timeout. It never sends player names, photos, your location, contacts or anything that identifies you or your phone.

The server gives the match a random 6-character code. Anyone who has the code or link can see that scoreboard, in the app or on auravolleyball.com/live. Each match is deleted automatically 24 hours after its last update, and Stop Sharing ends it sooner for viewers. The data isn't sold, shared with anyone or used for anything else. To limit abuse, the server briefly keeps a one-way scrambled form of the network address that starts a new match, and deletes it within an hour.

Please use team or club names, not children's names, when you name the teams.

Children

The apps are rated 4+ and are made for parents, coaches and officials rather than for children. They aren't directed to children under 13 and don't knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age.

This website

auravolleyball.com doesn't use cookies, doesn't require an account and doesn't ask for personal information. It loads no third-party scripts, fonts or trackers. Like most web hosts, the server (Hostinger) keeps standard access logs, such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested, for security and troubleshooting. If privacy-respecting, cookie-free analytics are ever added, this policy will be updated before that happens.

Affiliate links. The gear guide contains affiliate links to Amazon, each labeled "paid link". If you follow one and buy something, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Amazon's own privacy policy covers what Amazon collects. I don't receive personal information about you from Amazon, only aggregate reports on clicks and orders.

Third parties

There's no advertising network, no analytics provider and no data broker involved in the apps. Nothing is sold or shared, because nothing is collected. Apple processes purchases and gives me anonymous, aggregate sales reports under Apple's privacy policy.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. Material changes will also be mentioned in the apps' release notes.
